More than 2,000 years ago, the Romans conquered Britain and utilized what is now known as the city of Bath. The Romans founded the original baths and the city of Bath became a popular and luxurious place to live and visit because of the Roman baths that were built there. Bath has natural thermal hot springs that were used by the Romans in the 1st century AD. Bathing was a critical part of Roman culture and they believed bathing could help prevent the spread of illness and could treat certain ailments. Bathing was also a popular social activity for the Romans, so during its heyday, the Roman Baths were an elite place to be. Visiting the baths today, it’s incredible to see how well intact the baths still are. It’s a rather large compound with many rooms and places for bathing and even physical activity spots for exercise.
Although our trip to Bath was a short day trip, we thoroughly enjoyed our time exploring the Roman baths and walking around the city. I was impressed by the architecture of the buildings and the Bath Abbey, as well as the iconic royal crescent landmark.
